City police will propose that up to 6,000 more close-circuit television cameras be installed around Bangkok.
Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Pisit Pisutsak said on Wednesday that police would seek approval from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to install thousands more CCTV cameras in the city area to help fight crime.
He said police stations under the Metropolitan Police Bureau had surveyed their areas and submitted reports outlining which areas still needed security cameras in place to deter crime.
However, some of the surveys seemed to be very superficial and would need to be done again.
The MPB deputy chief was speaking after a meeting to examine the reports sent in by the police districts. All stations would be required to resubmit their survey results tomorrow, he said.
Pol Maj Gen Pisit said he had instructed all police stations to ensure all sois and sub-sois within their jurisdiction were properly surveyed, to ensure police have eyes everywhere. If a crime occurred at a location where there were no cameras in place and police failed to collect the necessary evidence, they would be punished because the MPB had given them the opportunity to suggest places in need of the cameras.
A total of 17,000 CCTV cameras have been already been installed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the private sector at residential buildings, shopping areas and commercial banks throughout the city.
